Giyas Ali's Love & His Time Alone

Giyas Ali's Love & His Time Alone Stories by Sadique Hossain, Translated by Nandini Gupta

Nandini Gupta's translated Giyas Ali's Love & His Time Alone collection into English and it contains six distinct short works, by Sadique Hossain; these stories portray rural community life with a blend of realism and surrealism. The author also depicts many different types of images throughout the body of work; thus, these same images may be viewed as metaphors for love, loneliness and humanity's vulnerability.

The stories each illustrate different "levels" of yearning and desire to struggle. For example - Giyas Ali's title story represents his quiet yearning, while Birth is a raw and honest depiction of Rahima's betrayal and postpartum struggles. Abhisarika adds a ghostly element to the concept of forbidden love, whilst Abu Bakar's Surroundings is an obsessional story based on the desire for duck meat. Many of the stories carry multiple layers of meaning, owing to their incorporation of cultural and spiritual elements; they also reference historical Islamic events and individuals from both the Old and the New Testaments.

While the prose is very poetic and filled with metaphors, the stories sometimes tend to have a non-linear style that can make them difficult to read at times; however, once completed, they will notify the reader of the depth and meaning of love, morals, and the human experience.

What I liked:

✨Beautiful and lyrical prose

✨Unforgettable characters and themes of betrayal, longing, and love.

What could have been better:

✨Non-linear storytelling - may cause some readers to become confused as to how the stories develop

✨The amount of symbolism used may be overwhelming for some readers.

A vivid, surreal, and thought-provoking collection. If you enjoy reading symbolic and introspective tales written in lyrical style, you will enjoy this book.
